The hormone that tells your body when it is time to sleep and dream about your European adventures on your Emma Mattress is called melatonin. This hormone is produced by your body. Contrary to popular beliefs melatonin itself won’t knock you out. However, it will help you fall asleep easier.

Circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock. It tells your body when you are hungry, when it is time to sleep and wake up. Melatonin works together with our body’s clock. Its levels rise as it starts getting dark outside, letting your body know it is time to sleep. The exact way this works is still unclear. However, the latest research shows that these processes are actually effective and help you fall asleep. Additionally, the same research confirmed that the quality of sleep is better. 


Have you ever had to travel to Europe and back in five days? If not you are lucky. The previously mentioned research showed that melatonin can help reduce your jet lag by syncing your internal clock with the time change. 


The production of melatonin varies a lot. Factors such as smoking, exposure to light, aging and many others affect your levels of the hormone.



Healthy Side Effects


Besides helping you fall asleep, melatonin could help you with other aspects of your health as well. Healthy levels of the hormone could lower the risk of eye diseases and can help with seasonal depression.


Melatonin Supplements


If you would like to try melatonin supplements to boost your body’s level of that hormone, your Emma suggests to start with a lower dose, such as 0.5mg or 1mg approximately 30 minutes before going to bed. If that does not help, try increasing your dose. In case that does not help then you definitely need a new Emma Mattress to help you fall asleep easier.
