We’ve all been there. Little Tommy runs into the bedroom in the middle of the night when you just fell into that perfect REM cycle. He jerks you awake to face the harsh yellow reality. You basically fall out of bed and follow your half-soaked child into his freshly dampened bedroom only to realize you have no idea how to make that mattress great (dry) again. Do you use soap? A towel? Pee-be-gone? Well good thing you’re here before you get down and dirty on the bedroom floor. Now, let’s see how to get pee out of a mattress.
Step One: Grab a towel or old cloth to soak up any additional pee that hasn’t been absorbed by the mattress.
Step Two: Take all sheets, the mattress cover, and the comforter off the bed and wash them as soon as possible. This is to avoid any lingering odors.
Step Three: Use a small amount of baking soda on the urine-soaked area of the mattress in order to absorb some of the liquid.
Step Four: Become a chemist, just kidding, well kind of. Make a mixture that is one-half white vinegar and one-half warm water. Spay the solution over the stained area of the mattress and wait about 5 minutes. Use a liberal amount of the solution since you want enough of it applied to counteract the amount of pee absorbed into the mattress.
Step Five: Open windows or use a fan to limit the smell from your homemade concoction and well, little Tommy’s pee-pee.
Step Six: Get out your towel or cloth again, it’s time for another round of soak up the moisture. Make sure you remove as much as possible to prevent mold buildup.
Step Seven: This is the hard one and we’ll try to break it to you gently. The mattress needs to dry overnight so that means little Tommy might have to sleep with you. Yes, we’re sorry, it’s probably not going to be the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had.
Step Eight: Add some more baking soda before you leave it dry, which gives it a little something extra for good measure. Vacuum up any excess powder and set the mattress up horizontally, if possible, for the ultimate drying experience.
Now that you’ve managed to get pee out of a mattress, maybe you’re fuming from scrubbing or maybe you’re a mellowed-out Mom that doesn’t get too upset about lack of sleep (if so, who are you?) Anyway, how about some methods for dissuading little Tommy from doing the dirty deed again?
No drinking after a certain time of day, drinking earlier in the day is the key to a pee-free mattress.
Bathroom visits every 3 hours or so before bedtime; an empty bladder is a happy bladder.
Cut the caffeine, especially at night this can irritate the child’s bladder causing him or her to lose control during the night, yikes.
Don’t wake your child up and demand that they do a number 1, this leads to further bed wetting routines and a very unhappy mother. Also don’t punish your child for wetting the bed since little Tommy’s is learning, it’s not his fault!
We wish you sweet dreams on your Emma mattress that you deserve, especially after all that hard work! Now you forever know: how to get pee out of a mattress.
