Or maybe you moved around your furniture now and then to create a new ambiance in your room. However, maybe you didn’t know that the teachings of feng shui can be applied to your bedroom to provide you a better night’s sleep!
What is Feng Shui?
Feng shui originated in ancient China, claiming to harmonize humans with their environments through the redirection of energy forces. Translated to English, the term feng shui literally means “wind-water.” Historically, the practice was used to situate spiritual structures in harmony with their environments. By doing so, they would be easy to locate via stars, bodies of water, or compasses. Nowadays, feng shui is used to place human-built structures in areas of good “qi,” a concept of positive energy.
Feng Shui Home
Feng shui rests on the principle that our home is a mirror of what’s inside us. Therefore, if we balance our homes, then we balance our lives. The first step to a feng shui home is to declutter. This is particularly important near the entrance of the home, which is where all energy flows in and out from. Lamps and mirrors in the entry-way of a home also serve to provide a better energy flow throughout the house.
With regards to the rest of the house, it is vital to remove anything broken, as this dampens the flow of qi. It is also recommended to space out appliances that “oppose” each other (such as a stove and a fridge) in order to diffuse tension in the air. Fruits and flowers add a fresh note to a home. As they are living, they bring life to your home and encourage good energy.
Feng Shui Bedroom
The placement of furniture in your bedroom has a huge affect on the room’s feng shui, according to the ancient practice. One of the most important aspects of feng shui for a good night’s sleep is bed placement. First, the headboard should be against a wall. This provides a subtle sense of security that makes sleep come easier. Second, your Emma mattress should always be on the opposite wall of the entryway, ideally facing the door. This allows for a flow of energy directed towards your sleep.
In addition to the placement of the bed, feng shui traditions suggest removing hanging furniture above your bed, such as chandeliers or hanging plants. This creates a sense of uneasiness that, although you may not notice in the moment, will be present in your subconscious, making it difficult to fall asleep. This holds true for large furniture around the bed as well. Such pieces could block the flow of positive energy to your bed. Symmetry is also a factor to keep in mind, as balance is at the heart of feng shui. Keeping a bedroom symmetrical as well as adding cozy elements such as nice rugs or blankets, have been found to improve one’s sleep.
